Use Your Central Air and Still Save Energy: 5 Tips
We’re in for a hot summer. Temperatures will be high, and we’ll all be sitting in front of our air conditioners, all the while hoping that the heat will relent.
Those of us who are lucky will be able to rely on our central air to get us through it. Some of us, though, will avoid running our air to avoid those huge energy bills.
Of course, no one should have to suffer the summer heat for fear of shelling out lots of cash. Because we want you to stay cool this season, we’re giving you five tips that will allow you to use your air while saving energy.
Keep Your Curtains Closed
We know that you want to soak up that summer sun and get your daily dose of vitamin D. Even so, keeping your curtains closed might be better for your wallet during the warmer months.
Your air unit has to work a lot harder when your home is flooded with light. If you reduce the amount of light in your home, your home will stay cooler.
Don’t Run Appliances Which Produce Heat
Dishes must be washed. Food must be cooked. Clothes must be dried.
We get it. You have to complete your daily chores. This doesn’t, however, mean that you can’t be strategic about running machines which produce heat.
That said, try running the dryer when you’re not home. The same goes for your dishwasher.
Turn Your AC Down
This one might sound counterintuitive. You know that it’ll save money, but how could turning your AC down still keep your home cool?
As it turns out, you can keep your cool and your AC low if you preserve the air in your home. You can do this by making sure that you keep your blinds closed. You should also make sure your windows aren’t drafty.
Move Your AC Out of the Sun
Did you know that keeping your AC unit in the sun can negatively affect how your air runs? Even if you have the most reliable AC unit, this will still be true.
Generally speaking, you shouldn’t put your unit on the east or west side of your home. North is said to be the best location for it.
Turn on Your Fan
Technically speaking, this tip isn’t telling you how to run your AC at a low cost. It’s instead telling that it’s perfectly fine to skip the AC.
Needless to say, this is recommended when the time is right. We’re talking evenings and nights here since the temperature drops later in the day. You could also try running the AC on low and in conjunction with a fan.
Run Your Central Air For Less
It is completely possible to run your AC and cut costs. You just have to put a little thought into how and when you run your central air.
If you try the above tips and find that your AC doesn’t work as well as it should, you might have a different problem on your hands. It might be time to call in the experts for some HVAC services.
