Keep Your Home Warm with These 3 Central Heating Tips

Most of us are still basking in the remaining days of summer. But as the temperatures become cooler, one thing is certain:

Winter is coming!

And before you know it, you’ll be turning up your thermostat and getting cozy in your heated home.

But how do you keep your central heating system working right so you and your family can stay warm all winter long?

Now is the perfect time to check your heating system. And we’ve laid out the 3 best tips to help you maintain your heating system and keep it working properly!

Let’s find out what they are…

Central Heating

1. Clean Your Furnace & Ducts

Over time, the ducts in your home become clogged with dust, cobwebs, and other debris.

When this happens, the obstructed ducts prevent heat from circulating throughout your home. Which means you’ll waste money turning up the heat and your furnace will eventually wear out.

Luckily, it’s easy to clean ducts yourself. It will involve checking the furnace filter and cleaning the main ducts. You’ll also clean the supply registers, as well as the air registers.

Then, you’ll clean the blower compartment, the return air boot, and the furnace fan. You’ll most likely have to change the furnace filter, as well.

If you haven’t cleaned your central heating system in a while, you may need heavy duty vacuums to the job. In this case, you’ll need to call an HVAC company to help.

2. Check the Thermostat

If your thermostat isn’t working properly now, you could run into problems later on.

First, turn the thermostat up. You’ll hear it turn on and start to run. Try setting it a few degrees warmer than you normally keep it.

If it continues to run, your system is in good shape. If it turns off after a couple of minutes, something is wrong.

The batteries in an electric thermostat may need replacement. You can lift off the thermostat cover and replace the batteries. Take this time to also check the wiring and make sure there is nothing loose.

It could be something more serious. The furnace may be overheating, or the thermostat may need replacement.

In these cases, call your HVAC company. They can identify the problem and fix it accordingly, so you don’t wind up wasting more time and money in the future. They can also properly work with older central heating systems and thermostats.

3. Upgrade Your Furnace

Over time, furnaces get old and require replacement. But how can you tell if you need to replace yours?

Check the label on your furnace. On average, furnaces last up to 15 to 20 years. If it’s approaching the end of its life expectancy, you should prepare to replace it now – or in the near future.

Most homeowners don’t want to go through the costs and hassles to replace their furnaces and central heating systems. But what they don’t realize is that they could actually save money doing so in the long run.

Because new furnaces work better, you won’t have to turn the thermostat up so high. Not to mention, newer furnaces are more energy efficient than ever before. Which means lower heating bills for you!

Have you already checked the label, cleaned the ducts, and tested the thermostat? Not sure if you should replace your furnace in the end?

Call your local HVAC company to come check it out.
