What Makes An Air Conditioning System Last Longer?
Did you know that that the air conditioning system in the United States takes up 6 percent of all electricity? While this is great for the power company it’s not so great for homeowners.
Learning how to manage and prolong your air conditioner is crucial to avoid costly fees. Your cooling system should last anywhere from 10 to 15 years. We know that you’d rather stay on the end of this date range.
That’s why we’ve outlined 4 steps you can take to help your air conditioning system last longer.

1. Utilize Other Cooling Methods
Air conditioning isn’t the only way to cool down your home. If you live in a dry climate, closing your blinds will make a big difference.
Direct sunlight can quickly heat up space, so before you go cranking the AC, be sure to check to see if there are blinds or windows open that are letting the heat in.
Another option is to use a fan. If the air is cooler than your body temperature than the constant circulation will help cool off your skin. Both of these options are simple and easy to complete, but they can have a big impact on the life of your unit.
The less strain you put on it, the longer it will last. Here are some other cheap ways to cool your house during the summer.
2. Clean it Regularly
This next step is crucial. Air conditioning units typically take air from outside. This air can be filled with dust and pollen.
Unfortunately, many people forget to clean the ducts and filter regularly. This allows these pathogens to build up and cause damage. You should always make sure that there is nothing blocking the filter, and that it is well protected outside.
Also, it is recommended that you change your air filter every month or every other month, especially during heavy usage.
3. Focus On Preventative Care
The best care you can give to your AC system is preventative care. This can be achieved by having an air conditioning technician check out your unit regularly. We recommend scheduling a visit at least twice a year, once before the heat hits and once at the end of summer.
4. Don’t Blast it
Cooling systems work hard to bring the temperatures down. The higher the temperature, the more your unit needs to work. On those days when the heat is blaring, it can be incredibly tempting to crank the AC down really low.
Not only should you avoid doing this, but you should, in fact, do the opposite. Instead, let your system work a little bit less by setting the temperature higher.
