Potential HVAC Problems
Some HVAC problems are easy to fix. Some will require a repairman to visit. And some aren’t HVAC problems at all.
Read on to figure out how to keep your home warm and energy sufficient.
1. Filters
When heaters are overused, the filters can get clogged with dust and debris. This will lead to decreased air flow.
If your heater is working properly, the first place to look is the air filter. By simply changing the air filter, your heater may be up and running in no time.
This is by far the easiest fix and one that a homeowner can do themselves. In fact, industry standards suggest replacing your HVAC air filter every 2 to 3 months.
2. Faulty Thermostat
Often, the problem can be with the thermostat itself. If a furnace is constantly turning on then off, start by looking at the thermostat. It may be time to replace any faulty wires, calibrate the thermostat, or just replace it altogether.
If fixing the thermostat doesn’t work then there may be a problem with the airflow. Sometimes part of the furnace can heat up too quickly, causing the emergency stop system to kick in.
If this is what is happening, your best bet is to call an HVAC technician to look at it.
3. Frozen Water Pipes
If you live in a climate that dips below freezing temperatures, you need to be aware of frozen water pipes.
This can happen when pipes and coils freeze, preventing water from flowing through pipes. This will cause water heaters, and steam radiators to stop working.
Sometimes these pipes can actually burst. If this happens you’ll need to turn off the water and call a repairman immediately.
4. Drafts
Have you ever noticed that some rooms are always colder than others? This may not be HVAC related, but actually a draft issue.
Some causes for drafts include:
- Crack around windowsills
- Lack of insulation
- Ill-fitting doors
One way to know if you have a draft issue is to get an energy audit on your home. This will help identify the sources and let you know what needs to be fixed.
Once you know your home is draft free, your HVAC won’t have to work so hard to keep it warm.
